Something that was long awaited is coming to Mac users - utorrent! If you download torrents then you know what a pain it was on mac. Now things are changing rapidly - currently i am using Transmission which runs natively on leopard. The program is ok, i have used it before in ubuntu, but it definately has some problems with high speed downloads. My favorite torrent client comes from windows - µTorrent. The development of mac version has been ongoing from quite a long time (2 years?), and users have been pretty eager to use the new version. The µTorrent were spammed with questions about when is the mac version going to come out, resulting in moderators locking every single topic that was concerned with the mac :) My advice - to pledge your support go to mac.utorrent.com and show the developer that you are interested! I download lots of torrents and cant wait till the stable release comes out, of and BTW a beta leaked out just recentely - grab it here!

Yesterday i did something which i would never do in a normal world :) Recently our network bought a neighboring network with around 110 clients and we were in the process of connecting them to our network. But yesterday something unexpected happened - the MAN provider refused to leases the optical fiber to them and about 90 ppl stayed without net for half a day. As a quick solution to the problem we connected out fiber connectedly to their office and i tried to SNAT their net to our router but for some reason (it always works doesn't it?) i didn't succeed to do that :( So the best solution was... DD-WRT :D Since the office they have is used as a warehouse now we had a couple of Linksys WRT54G, i grabbed one and quickly flashed it with fresh DD-WRT v24, NATed the old IPs and routed them through our router. I didn't expect a miracle to happen but it it all went nice and smooth - the network was feed up with Internet again. For the whole day poor Broadcom worked just fine caring around 30mbps/10mbps up/down traffic, but as the evening approached things got worse and worse :( Around 22:00 when the peak traffic came (about 50mbps) the router stopped to forward packets but i was still about to SSH it. When i tried to reboot it it died. As i said in the beginning i didn't expect a miracle but a total death was not expected, i think i will do some other probes and try to ask the guys at the dd-wrt forums what could have caused the sudden death ?

UNBELIEVABLE !!! Di.fm is currently the biggest and in my opinion the best radio station in the internet. I just noticed on their blog the following:

THE ISSUE:
In March the United States Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) made a decision on what the webcasting royalties should be going forward and dating back starting with 2006.

The new fees, making us owe literally more than *two million dollars* due July 15th, do not take any realistic business model of a service such as ours and most others on the web into account. The short story translation is that Digitally Imported the company already owes just for 2006 many many times more in royalty fees than all combined revenue generated. Imagine a picture similar to if for every $1 we earn before even any expenses, we actually owe about $5 in royalty fees.

To make an analogy, imagine there was a law passed on an ice cream tax, and the tax rate depended on the number of visitors visiting your store rather than how much ice cream the store sold. So imagine the tax does not care if ice cream buyers came just to hang out and get a little bit of icecream - all ice cream stands would go out of business except those who sell wholesale mega packs to a few visitors in places like Sams Club or Costco, or Walmart if it was willing to loose money just to get you into their store.

The CRB judges completely ignored independent webcasters such as us and our business models, and adopted only a very high per song performance fee, without any kind of a provision for a percentage of revenue.

Full post here

WTF is that? I can not believe that Di.fm can be shut down, 2 milion $$$... where the hell should they get this money from? And if it does happen where will all of us listen to our weekly State of Trance ? :( If you live in the US, there is a site that describes what you can do to help the Internet Radio - Savenetradio.org. The new laws will be in effect on July 15th, and i am going to US on July 7th - i will call the f#$%$ing representative on the very fist day i arrive there, so U.S. Representative Thomas Allen - be prepared for a looooong phone talk :)

Some time ago as usual i was checking whats happening in Linux world and on HowToForge (its a great site btw) i found that article How To Harden PHP5 With Suhosin (Debian Etch/Ubuntu). I decided to look some further into the PHP security issue and yes there are numerous flaws in the PHP servers ;). But most of them are produced by not skilled programmers who create vulnerable code. Overall that would most likely fit my situation since i classify my self as a "recreational PHP programmer. So what i did? I followed the how to and re-compiled my PHP in order to harden my PHP... The result ? Who knows, maybe i am more secure now :)

Uncle Rodney says, "10/10, Amarok is seriously super!" I missed and update that should be marked crucial for me since everything connected with music is crucial for me. Amarok 1.4.5 came out on 05.02.2007 and i updated it just today. Why? i dont know :) 1.4.4 was working perfectly till now. Although i am a fan of GNOME, there is no music player like Amarok so i run it under GNOME. In the Issue 6 of AMW (Amarok Weekly News Letter) one can read "Native ports to Windows / OS X. More than likely will occur, but let's keep this on the backseat until we have a function application." WoW ! Amarok for Windows, i didint expect that, well its time for M$ users to Rediscover their Music !
